Love Hate Relationship

They say that
So,
if this is the case,
then why is my love of money,
and my love of spending,
(and my ultimate love of eating out),
always getting me in the shit.

Money doesn't equal happiness.
But it sure as well helps.

So, to fix this little problem,
I'm now in the process of sorting out my funds.
Figuring out where my money is going.
And how I can go about saving.

Disposable Camera Project

This new age of technology is beginning to irritate me.
Facebook, Skype, Email,
photo uploading, photo tagging, file sharing.
I miss film.
I miss not knowing what my photos would turn out like.
I miss having to wait to get the film developed.
And I miss not being able to delete photos.

My summer project.
The idea is simple.
Whenever my film is empty, I will purchase a new film for my "reusable disposable camera".
With this, I will take photos of anything.
Fun, Ugly, Wonderful, Strange, Beautiful, Shocking, People, etc.
I will develop the film after it has been filled at the end of the month.
Or just whenever I have enough money to do so.

This could turn into an expensive habit.

Stages.

The three major creative stages of my life:
I like to think of them as 3 different candles.
One for photography (and photographic images),
one for writing,
and one for drawing.

The photographic candle is made of that kind of plastic-ish, fake wax, the kind that takes forever to burn out.
It is the biggest candle.
The most inspiring.
The most enjoyable.

The writing candle is one of those "trick" candles. Where it may often go out, but will always re-light itself.
This is my favourite candle.
The most influenced.
The most exciting.

The drawing candle has an annoying wick, the kind that won't light when you want it to.
This is the most annoying candle.
The most confusing.
The one I seem to have given up on.
Who knows?
Maybe one day I will relight it.
Or maybe I'll just leave it on the windowsill as a reminder of my creative past.

Either way I'm happy.
So long as I have my camera.

Summer

I love how you can talk your mind into believing it is summer.
Summer activities are actually incredibly fun in the rain....

"If there is magic on the planet, it is contained in the water."

I love rain-rollerblading, beach-paddling, and wharf-jumping.
I also love these girls,
and the things we did together that fine-ish day.

Colourful Moments

As beautiful as an image can be in black and white, there is no real joy without colour.
Same applies for life.

A bit of Depp

A guy came in to work early this afternoon dressed as the mad hatter
and it reminded me of this image I found online some time ago.

It is not only his good looks or his charming accent that I'm fond of..
It is the characters.
The wacky, insane, terrible, crazy, beautiful characters.

Beautiful Balloons

It seems to me that everything is so much more fun, more beautiful, more delightful, more precious,
when balloons are involved.

In seeing a balloon,
my mood suddenly changes.
For the better.

Travel

In a conversation I had tonight I voiced the sentence;
"just fuck off and enjoy your life".
And after a bit of thought, I realised just how many people out there haven’t travelled, or wont, because of what, or who, they are leaving behind.
I understand that leaving the comfortable and secure can be a tad daunting...

But what do we have to lose?

Memories are very rarely lost, and so often made.
Money can be earned overseas, (and obviously easily spent).
Friendships will still be here when ya get back.

And if people really are the only thing stopping you, take them with you.
Like I did....

I want to go further; I want to see more;
and sometimes,
I just want someone to take me back to New York.
Please.

Write

Jennifer Egan:
"My advice is so basic. Number one: Read. I feel like it’s amazing how many people I know who want to be writers who don’t really read. I’m not convinced someone wants to be a writer if they don’t read. I don’t think the problem is that they need to read more; I think they might need to readjust their life goals. Reading is the nourishment that lets you do interesting work. To be reading good things. I feel that you should be reading what you want to write. Nothing less.

The second thing is, I feel like getting in the habit of it is huge. I guess that was my one accomplishment of those two years [with the first failed novel]— making it a routine is a gigantic part of it.

One corollary of that— and this is probably the most important thing for me— is being willing to write really badly. It won’t hurt you to do that. I think there is this fear of writing badly, something primal about it, like: “This bad stuff is coming out of me…” Forget it! Let it float away and the good stuff follows. For me, the bad beginning is just something to build on. It’s no big deal. You have to give yourself permission to do that because you can’t expect to write regularly and always write well. That’s when people get into the habit of waiting for the good moments, and that is where I think writer’s block comes from. Like: It’s not happening. Well, maybe good writing isn’t happening, but let some bad writing happen. Let it happen!

So, just write and be happy that you did it. You stuck to the routine. You’re kind of holding the place so that you’re present for when something good is ready to come.

And then it’s all about rewriting. Re-visiting, re-visiting and re-writing. I think it’s a mistake to be too precious about one’s words. I feel the same way about the criticism. You’re not going to break! It’s pretty tough to stick it out, to do this. So, get used to it! People are going to not like it. Okay! You’ll live. So, it’s bad. Okay. You’ll live! They said ‘no.’ You know what? Everyone gets said ‘no’ to a thousand times. If that is really something that you can’t tolerate, this may not work. "

Singing in the Rain

There is something kind of wonderful in a rainy day. Whether it be the extra warmth of your duvet and the heat of the fire; the “pitter patter” of the rain on your rain jackets hood; the way it ripples when it has fallen, they enjoyment of jumping in puddles, intimate moments (usually found in rom-coms and soppy chick-flicks), watching a car glide through a large puddle, umbrellas...

"And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow." Gilbert K. Chesterton

I wish my camera was good enough to take great photos of rain.
It is not.
Flickr and Google will have to make do.

My friends all hear me constantly complain about the rain and the cold and the horrible Wellington spring weather, but the truth is, I actually quite like it.
I secretly adore it.

After the first initial hatred of being outside in the wet, the experience is one of a kind,
Exhilarating .
And it’s fun.
That is, after the hour of procrastination before leaving your house.

Flickr users have beautiful rain moments captured on camera.

It makes sense to me why so many songs exist around the topic of rain.

It’s worth a smile.

Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
Langston Hughes
